Mercado 28 Description

Located on a big square in the heart of downtown Cancun, Mercado 28 is a fun and colorful local market with more than 100 shops selling traditional Mexican arts and crafts, pottery, jewelry, clothing, shoes, rugs and blankets, herbs and remedies, and regional cuisine. This popular shopping spot is a favorite not only with tourists, but locals also do their daily shopping here, too. This is a great outing for a family, and you'll see up close that the stereotype that Mexicans like children is true when a local vendor tries to slip yours a treat or gift.

  • Live Music Venue

  • Clothing & Accessory Store

  • Ethnic Store

Kid Tips

Babies: Babies will enjoy babbling with strangers and people walking by smiling at them. Though stroller friendly, the market can get crowded, so consider carrying your baby in a front pack.

Toddlers & Pre-K: Make sure to visit the candy stores, which sell Mexican treats and unusual candies that you won't find in the U.S..

School-Age Kids: Kids interested in Mexican history and traditional culture can find typical handmade wooden Mexican toys.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Teens will be happy to shop for cool souvenirs for friends, many which cost as little as a dollar.

Planning Notes

  • Use your bargaining skills. Most of the stores expect you to bargain! Never pay the first amount that they ask for any item.
  • Bring cash. Many stores don't accept credit or debit cards (though there are banks nearby with ATMs where you can withdraw cash).
  • Try the regional specialty. Enjoy a hearty breakfast or lunch in the restaurants in the center of the market. Order "pescado tikinxic," a red fish made with lime, onions, and paprika.
