My story about: Moving to a Big-Kid Bed

wilpowr's story

June 27, 2007

Before my daughter turned 3 years old, my wife and I decided that we wanted to get her a bed for her birthday. Prepping her for this, we talked to her encouraging her that when she turned 3 she would be a big girl and would sleep in her big girl bed. We went to the furniture store and looked around the place to find beds that would match the decor of her room and let her choose between the 2 or so choices that my wife and I thought matched the room. She was excited and I even got her to lie down on the bed in the store to see if she liked her new bed. She was excited with the prospect of sleeping in something other than a crib. That night I took apart her crib and put it in the garage and we took the mattress from the crib and put it on the floor for her to sleep on. Once again, she was excited to sleep on the floor that evening. The next day, the bed was delivered and set up, we put on new sheets and a comforter that she chose. Then we had a photo shoot of her in her new big girl bed. I even got her mom and her to pretend to be asleep for a few of the pictures. I believe that since we prepared her for it, making it something funm, attaching it to growing up and calling it a big girl bed made the transition as smooth as we had hoped.
