Self-Esteem

What Experts Say

No time of life seems to be more damaging to a person's self-esteem than adolescence. (Really, could you argue otherwise?) Kids become critical of almost every aspect of their beings -- and of each other! -- from their hair, skin, and clothes, to their voice, laugh, and interests. It's your job as a parent to help your child develop healthy self-esteem that can withstand the trials of adolescence.

That said, parents who value their kids help produce kids who value themselves. The National Association of School Psychologists suggests that you make sure to marvel at your child's accomplishments and appreciate things about your child that set him apart from others -- maybe it's a connection with animals, dressing in a creative way, or having the ability to get along with just about anybody. Look for opportunities to praise your child in a genuine manner.

It's also important that you really listen to your child. When she vents to you about something stressful or upsetting, validate her concern rather than dismissing it. You could say something like, "That must be really hard," or "I can see why that's upsetting." Remember how big seemingly little things felt as a teen? A fight with a friend, for example, takes on great significance in adolescence -- let her know you understand that.
