What Experts Say

Early music lessons hit all the right notes.

"If music is a foundation as a child, it's like a second language," says Daniel Levitin, author of "This is Your Brain on Music" and a professor of music psychology at McGill University in Montreal.

Music, he says, exercises the attentional circuits in the brain and positions children to do better in the classroom. Children who know music read earlier and do scholastic tasks like mathematics more quickly. Plus, music has also been shown to stimulate the motor cortex. For example, some children with Down's Syndrome have learned to tie their shoes to the beat of music, he says....

"I completely agree that having a musical background gives you an edge in teaching music to your child.  But if you don't have one, you can still help them tremendously!

Fostering a love of music is the first big step in any child's musical education.  Share your favorite music with them, sing along with them when you hear a familiar song, take them to a concert, and listen to brand-new music with them to broaden both your musical tastes.  Sometimes your child may surprise you with what he or she likes -- it's not always just kiddie sing-alongs that appeal to kids!

And don't forget to teach them to clap or bang a toy in rhythm, or how to march to the beat of a song -- teaching them how to keep a steady, consistent rhythm is a fundamental musical skill.

Even if music lessons aren't in your child's immediate future, you can teach them a lot with what you know and like to listen to, and you might just broaden your own appreciation for music at the same time!"

I agree with you! For us it started with sining along to christmas songs. From there it went to banging on things to make music until we purchased a small keyboard. Both kids joined band in school and my daughter even plays piano now :)
