Manicures and Pedicures

What Experts Say*

Manicures and pedicures can go a long way toward making a pregnant woman feel pampered. It's fun to admire your neat and clean fingers and toes — if you can still see your feet, that is.

There's no evidence that getting your nails done while pregnant is dangerous, and though you are exposed to chemicals at the salon, the risk is pretty minimal. However, if you want to be extra careful, some experts suggest avoiding the nail salon during the first trimester while the fetus is in its early stages of development.

And, if you're sensitive to smells, be sure to get your mani-pedi's in an open area.

Artificial Nails

Again, there is no strong evidence of any danger associated with acrylic nails, but the chemical fumes can make you feel ill. If you do get fake nails, make sure you're in an open area with good ventilation and that you're not exposed to the fumes for a long time.

Remember, extra hormones can make many women's nails grow faster and become stronger during pregnancy, so why not take advantage and go natural?
