Let's face it, no parent enjoys this subject, and if your baby's throwing up, you can bet he's not having a good time of it, either. Most of the time, vomiting in babies, as in adults, is caused by a viral illness (the stomach flu), though some may be caused by more serious illnesses.

If your baby vomits, the first thing to do is determine if that's really what happened. If it was simply some milk bubbling back out of his mouth post-feeding or along with a burp, that's probably just spit up (technically called "reflux"). But if the ejection is more sudden and violent, it is vomit.

Vomiting occurs when the abdominal muscles and diaphragm contract...

When my baby vomited the first time...

The first time my baby vomited I burst into tears because it was at the end of an hour-long crying jag and I was already frustrated. My poor husband had to deal with a crying, vomiting baby and a hysterical wife. I made him drive us to the emergency room and yelled at him when he suggested I change out of my vomit-splattered shirt first. Luckily, it wasn't serious, but I'll never forget how scared I was. I've vomited plenty in my life and held the hair back of girlfriends who had a little too much as well, but it's true what they say about how having kids makes you see things in a new way. When my baby vomited, it was as though it was this brand-new alien disease that had never happened in the history of the world and I had to fix it RIGHT THEN. I was expecting that feeling from watching them blow bubbles or play in a puddle, but I guess you take the good with the bad.

Should I give my baby electrolyte drinks if he throws up?

Look at the labels on the electrolyte drinks you buy. First, make sure they are intended for babies. Second, look at the expiration dates on them. Some expire within a week or two of opening them. So you may not want to buy the biggest bottle available. Some come in smaller serving size bottles. You might also be able to find electrolytes in frozen pops. If your child has a fever or sore throat as well as vomiting these cool treats help soothe the throat and control the temperature.
