10 Questions: 'Ugly Betty' Star Vanessa Williams

Actress and songstress Vanessa Williams, made history as the first African-American Miss America who then launched a successful music career after her reign ended in scandal.
As the devious Wilhelmina Slater on the small-screen hit, "Ugly Betty," Vanessa plays the classic vixen we love to hate. We sat down with this mother of four to catch up on how she balances it all.
Lolita: What is a Modern Mom?
Vanessa: Having no choice but to do it all with grace.
Lolita: What's your secret to balancing career and family?
Vanessa: The secret is...there is no balancing. You have to
surrender to not be everywhere at all times. Everyone and
everything suffers at times but the guilt that a mother imposes
on herself it the worst of all. Do the best you can and know it's
good enough.
Lolita: What did your parents teach you about parenting?
Vanessa: To make your children independent so they can
survive in the world. Realize there are always consequences to
every action and always forgive with love.
Lolita: What do you want to teach your children?
Vanessa: Along with the lessons that my parents taught me,
my children respect life, the environment and treat people with
kindness.
Lolita: What's your favorite way to spend family time?
Vanessa: We go horseback riding at a ranch yearly, enjoy
vacations on the beach and love family time at the dinner
table.
Lolita: What is your greatest achievement?
Vanessa: I don't have one greatest achievement. I am
thankful for all the opportunities in life I've had which include
bearing four beautiful, healthy children; changing history
unexpectedly; performing on Broadway, at the Oscars, Grammys, and
Super Bowl and most of all, doing what I love while bringing
happiness to others.
Lolita: Who do you consider your role model and why?
Vanessa: My mother always amazes me with her unbounding
strength, wicked sense of humor, musical talent and
intelligence.
Lolita: What do you do when you're feeling selfish?
Vanessa: Get a massage.
Lolita: What product can't you live without?
Vanessa: Deep Cleansing Wash by Proactiv.
Lolita: What's keeping you busy these days?
Vanessa: Commuting from my home in New York to shoot "Ugly
Betty" during the week in Los Angeles and helping with
homework!
