In the days when Pocahontas lived, Native Americans (like the Powhatans) lived off the land by hunting and planting crops, such as maize, beans, and sunflowers. Like the real ones, these sunny yellow blossoms sway in the breeze on their long pipe-cleaner stems.

You'll need:

  • Pencil
  • Round objects (such as cookie cutters or jar lids) in varying diameters up to 2 to 4 inches
  • Craft foam (yellow, brown or black, and green)
  • Craft scissors
  • Tacky glue or hot glue
  • Green pipe cleaners
  • Ruler
  • Regular scissors or craft knife
  • 3 corrugated cardboard rectangles (about 4- by 12 inches)
  • 2 corrugated cardboard squares (4- by 4 inches)
Instructions:

1. For each flower you plan to make, trace one of the larger round objects onto yellow craft foam. Then trace a smaller round object first onto brown or black craft foam and then onto green craft foam. Use craft scissors to cut out all of the tracings.

2. Glue the brown (or black) circles onto the centers of the yellow circles.

3. Make a stem for each flower by tightly twisting together two green pipe cleaners and gluing the top to the back of the yellow foam. Then, cover the stem top by gluing one of the green craft foam circles over it. Step 3 part 1 Step 3 part 2
4. Next, cut out a pair of heart-shaped leaves (about 2 inches long and 1 1/2 inches wide) for each flower and glue them onto the ends of a green pipe cleaner. Twist the center of the pipe cleaner around the flower stem. Step 4
5. Now make a stand for your sunflowers by marking spots on the bottom edges of each cardboard rectangle 2 inches in from both sides. Cut notches (about 2 inches deep and 3/8 inches wide) at the marks. Next, make notches 2 inches deep and 1/2 inch wide centered in the top of each cardboard square. Step 5 part 1 Step 5 part 2
6. Assemble the cardboard pieces as shown. Then insert the flower stems down into the grooves of the cardboard panels' corrugated edges. Step 6
