"Superman." We're talking about the 1978 blockbuster here, with Christopher Reeve and Gene Hackman. Father-and-son themes are abundant in this classic flick, based on the DC comic that made its debut in the late 1930s.
"The Incredibles." Bob Parr, a.k.a. Mr. Incredible, is pulled out of his suburban family life to reclaim his long-lost superhero identity in order to help fight an evil villain. This also helps him avert a certain mid-life crisis; gives his wife, Helen, a chance to be "Elastigirl" again; and gives their three kids the chance to discover their own inherited superhero talents.
"Mrs. Doubtfire." Robin Williams stars in this 1993 comedy as a father who uses an unusual disguise to prove he'll do just about anything to spend time with his kids.
"To Kill a Mockingbird." This Academy Award-winning 1962 adaptation of Harper's Lee's classic novel is something you and your kids should see at least once. It's a coming-of-age story about Scout Finch and her brother Jem set in the American Deep South in the 1930s that never goes out of style.
"Pursuit of Happyness." Will Smith stars in this inspiring, true tale of a down-and-out dad who proves to himself and to his preschool-aged son that it's possible to realize a dream if you set a goal and never give up hope that you'll achieve it.
"Are We There Yet?" Rapper Ice Cube stars in this 2005 comedy as a bachelor pursuing a relationship with a single mom of two children, who are reluctant -- to say the least -- to cut him any slack.
"Finding Nemo." Who doesn't love this animated tale of a clown fish who temporarily misplaces his only son? Stellar performances by Ellen DeGeneres and Albert Brooks make this instant classic shine.
"Cheaper by the Dozen." A dad played by Steve Martin moves his wife and 12 kids to a new city when he gets his dream job coaching a college football team. While his wife is out of town, the situation proves overwhelming. A sequel came out in 2006.
"The Empire Strikes Back." Your kids may not remember this one, even if you've seen it fifty times yourself. In this, the second (and some say best) movie to come out of the Star Wars franchise in the 1980s, the evil Darth Vader makes his ultimate revelation to young Luke Skywalker with that famous, unforgettably breathy line: "I am your father."
"Big Fish." In this humorous and touching tale directed by Tim Burton, a son gets to know his mysterious father (played by both Ewan McGregor and Albert Finney) by dissecting some of his dying dad's tall tales.
