From the Disney Family Editors: Saving money is often a question of reigning in the daily, small stuff. Using coupons effectively at the supermarket is a great way to start.

Here are some tips on you can save on groceries! If you plan meals ahead using sale items, keep track of your inventory, use shopping lists, shop for bargains, cook meals ahead, and collect easy frugal recipes, you can save a substantial amount of money. Nanette cut her grocery bill almost in half using these methods.

  1. Check your household inventory to see what you already have. Keeping a list will help you to reduce waste and eliminate repeated trips to the store.

  2. Create meal plans based on what you have and loss leader sales. Use the weekly flyers to see what's on sale, buy as many extra sale items as your budget and space allow. This way a major portion of your weekly food budget will be purchased at the lowest possible price.

  3. Always use shopping lists and meal plans. To create a shopping list, write down the ingredients that you need to make the recipes from your meal plan. Then add any extra items that you need like toiletries, snacks, or pet items. Using a well-organized list will save you both time and money by organizing your purchases, keeping you to a plan and stopping repeat trips and impulse buying.

  4. Buy in bulk when the unit price is less. This simply means to buy the 64 oz. size at .07 per ounce instead of the 32 oz. size at .11 per ounce.

  5. Use coupons only for purchases that you would get anyway or want to try. Use a coupon organizer to help you easily find and use your coupons. I carry mine with me to the store to check if I can get a cheaper price for the items on my list. Try to only use coupons at stores that double or triple them.

  6. Never shop hungry. Stores are most crowded after work hours and on the weekends. If you can't shop during the weekdays try shopping after dinner hours instead of right after work when you are tired, hungry, and the stores are overcrowded.

  7. Use the store savings cards.

  8. Watch cash register tape for errors which are quicker to correct while in line than later. This is easier to do if you have a helper.

  9. Try store brands and generics. Premium store brands are often similar in quality to name brands. Many stores have guarantees if you try something and find it horrible.

  10. Attractive displays, fancy packaging, and convenience foods almost always cost more. Look at top and bottom shelves for the best bargains. Stores often put the most expensive and prettiest packages at eye level.

  11. Use a price booklet to trace your lowest prices. It will help you to discover sales patterns and good vs. bad bargains.

  12. Cook from scratch as often as possible.

  13. Vegetarian is cheaper. Try to have at least one vegetarian meal per week. Stretching meat by cooking casseroles or stir fry is also helpful.

  14. Iced tea is often cheaper than soda. Hot tea is cheaper than coffee. Making water with fancy straws, colored ice cubes or fresh fruit slices makes it more fun for both you and your children.

  15. Freezing meals ahead saves money, because you use up what was bought, don't impulse shop and eat out less. For example, make a double batch of Sunday's chili to thaw and reheat after Thursday's soccer game. This is cheaper and healthier than McDonald's drive through. You can also cook meals ahead for as much as a month to save you time and money.

  16. Get organized. Keep your meal plans, coupon organizer, shopping lists, price book, and sales flyers in a central locations. I keep my ongoing inventory list on a white board and my shopping list on the refrigerator.

Save on Groceries

Believe it or not, we have found that we save alot more on groceries when we buy them online (we use vons.com) rather than going to the store. There's no temptation to impulse shop( good for both the wallet and the waist!) plus the computer keeps a running total of how much we've spent, and it's definitely easier to remove an item from an online cart than a real cart. Most companies offer free delivery or charge as little as $5, so it really can be a budget idea.

My advice is to grab those blinkie coupons found in your store isles. You never know where or when that item will go on sale. Add those coupons to a great price down the road and you've got really cheap or free groceries! Also don't be afraid to solicit a friend or neighbor's coupons from her paper, chances are if she doesn't use them she'll be thrilled to share!

Mostly generic tips with a few new ones like the price booklet. I rarely find coupons for the items I actually use. I can't find dishes that my young children will consistently eat so planning a whole week's menu is difficult. I need a way to get coupons for products that my family wants to use when we can use them. We don't get the Sunday paper so those coupons are out.

Dollar stores are great for certain buys like glow in the dark bracelets(15 pc for a dollar!), but certain items are actually cheaper in a regular store. Like toothpicks, pencils, pens, latex helium balloons. Did you know that you can save mylar balloons and reinflate them? Usually a party store will only charge about $0.60 or less to reinflate a $8 balloon or larger.
