GoYo-gurt

Posted March 18, 2007
I get so excited about introducing the kids to new foods at breakfast, lunch and dinner that sometimes I forget they do their fair share of introducing (or re-introducing) me to some as well.

For years, I shunned yogurt. I thought it was too gloppy and sour to endure for a serving. I knew it was good for you -- particularly the more natural it is -- but I just couldn't get into it. But, with kids, I have… Read More

Egging on St. Patrick's Day

Posted March 14, 2007
A favorite St. Patrick's Day breakfast for us takes a tip from Dr. Seuss' beloved "Green Eggs and Ham." Gather 'round and read the story on St. Patrick's Eve. Then, on St. Patrick's Day, have the kids pitch in and help make the breakfast with their own variation of green eggs. The green eggs are created with little more than a tad of green food dye (found on your grocery store's spice aisle). Melt a tablespoon of unsalted butter in… Read More

Keeping Napkins Neat-O

Posted March 13, 2007

We go through plenty of napkins around here in a week, but we can never polish off too quickly the whole column that starts out with them in a standing stack-pack. In a Goldfish's Wake

Posted March 11, 2007

Now that we've just "mourned" the loss of yet another one of Rocco's goldfish (I lost count after the 12th one), I was reminded of how we held a kind of kid-friendly version of a "wake" -- with plenty of comfort food -- when the first fish died.

After the requisite "burial at sea," which I seriously thought was reserved for sitcom plot points until it happened at our home, we told Rocco we'd have a supper to celebrate

Birthday Party Number Crunching

Posted March 09, 2007

My wife and I are in the talking stages of what to do for the next kid's birthday party: our daughter ChiChi LaRue (I'm not sure why, but that's become our nickname for her this week) turns two next month.

Last year, we celebrated with a Garden Party theme with 40 guests. It was a Saturday brunch with egg casserole, a tropical fruit platter, bagels and shmears, and I constructed a literal, edible rosebush with rose-shaped cakelets surrounded by

A Tale of Two Grocery Stores

Posted March 07, 2007

I admit it: I love grocery shopping. Gathering a list, scouring the aisles, finding an item by memory or without having to ask… it's like a board game come to life for me. Still, I also know that the routine can become mundane, so mixing it up has become it's own game for me. It's just that -- I know from experience that -- stores all have their idiosyncrasies. Sure many of them carry the same brands, but almost all
